Woo hooo! While the end of summer is always sad (bye bye beach babes . . . ) it does mean football season. And there is almost nothing better.

First things first:

That's the link to the pool page. It's also to the right on this page.

Second, as was previously announced, there will be a Master's Pool! The person with the most correct picks for the season will win a $100 gift card to Dave and Busters, and, I gotta tell you . . . that $100 will be the most fun you'll have ever. The place has great food and tons of great games. Thanks to Jim Becker and Epic for helping me out on this. I know I got things started a little late, but still can't help calling everyone a bunch of pansy-ass cheapskates. Whatever. I'd still like to see a $500 pot to award, but this Dave and Busters thing might become a tradition. The place is a lot of fun.

There is no extra charge for the Master's Pool. Again, thanks to Epic for their generous donation.

A few other rules:

First, the person with the most picks will likely have participated every week. So, it's best if you try to do that! In years past I would allow two games missed. Not this year. You have to play every week. I went to the online system to make things easier, faster, and more accurate than doing it all manually. The trade off is a little less flexibility with some of the options. Well, eat my belly button lint. The needs of the one far outweigh the needs of the many. Anyway . . .

Everyone who plays is automatically eligible for the Master's Pool and its prize.

Anyone can play the weekly pool. The weekly pool is $1 per week. You can pay the entire season upfront, as several have, or just pay each week you play. Doesn't matter. The person who scores the most correct picks for that week wins the weekly pot.

Throughout, I will send out reminders and updates in my typical narcissistic manner. I welcome comments, suggestions, and criticisms. Though, the latter will likely spur a verbal thrashing.

That's about it. If you have any actual questions about the online system, feel free to ask. I'll be nice.

Final Master's Results

This took a bit of work. OK. It was nothing, really. I was just too lazy and enjoying a vicodin buzz to do this yesterday.

Let's dispense with the drama, shall we? In a most fitting turn of events, John Crossman won the last week of the weekly pool, and also secured his first place win in the Master's Pool. Congratulations to Johnny! I think he won once in the weekly contest. Proving that steady going is best over all.

Now, I've had a change of heart . . . thanks to Scott. He pointed out to me that he would be punished more than other people when I drop the two lowest scores as his scores were all median scores where as some people had a similar total but worse lower scores. Follow? Well, I did, and Scott was correct . . . and that's not right. It would actually be more fair to dump a highest and lowest score. So, as I've always said . . . I have the power to change the rules whenever I feel like. Of course, I usually only do that when it benefits me. But, I'm also not above bribes (thanks, Scott).

One thing I did this year was allow for no missing weeks. One of the reasons I implemented the 15 week rules was to account for missed weeks due to travel. Well, if you recall, I fixed that. Anyone in the Master's pool who missed a week would automatically be awarded the online spread total from the link I use. So, in effect, the "dump two weeks" rule isn't needed as everyone would have played 17 weeks. So, play 17 weeks we will!

Johnny still wins. There's no question there. However, Lindsay and Wacky are tied in second. As I mentioned, I would use the weekly tie breaker as the tie breaker for the final score. Lindsay guessed 35 points. Wacky guessed 43 points. The actual total was 40 points. So, by 2 points, John Wackman takes second place! Which puts Lindsay in third. The official standings:

Second: John Wackman $90
Third: Lindsay $60

Scott, Mosey (GE) and myself were all nipping at their ankles . . . and we all did great on the last game. Just too little too late.

ADDENDUM: People DO read this. Lindsay correctly pointed out that Andy and Sandy both have 14 . . . yet, Johnny, with 13, won the weekly pool. Simple answer . . . they both got their total from the online spread (footballocks.com) for the week. While that total goes to your total total, you cannot win a weekly game that way as you didn't make the picks yourself. And, if you weren't in the Master's pool you just didn't have a submission for that week.

Addendum 2: I took of the one result view as it reflected removing the two low scores . . . and that wasn't accurate. The one view is all that is needed.

Week 16 results

OK. What did I tell you? Every week I pick 60 points for my total. Right? The Packers played the Seahawks people! The Seahawks! Did you really think there would only be 44 points in the game, Steve? 35, Linds? 45, Cherie? 42, Johnny? Andy was the only one close with 53. But, at 60, had there been a 7 way tie, I would have won.

No. I didn't win. Nope. The ONLY idiot to pick the Bears to beat the Viqueens . . . I mean . . . how dumb is that? The ONLY dumbass to pick the Viqueens, won. Mikey. When I looked at the sheets and saw the 7 way tie and knew of the 58 point total, I KNEW I won. I knew it. Looking at the other scores confirmed what I already knew. My heart skipped a beat when I saw Andy's total. But, a quick calculation in my head and I was breathing right again.

Then it occurred to me. What if some dumbass picked the Bears? Noooo. You'd have to be a complete moron to do that. I'm pretty sure Mike's was the last sheet I looked at. Sure enough. He picked the Bears.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Did you watch the game? On the one hand, for all those favreaholics, it was great! He looked like crap in the first half. Of course, these are the Bears we're talking about. In spite of what I was seeing I had doubts they would win. Sure enough. Soon it's tied, and soon it's over time. Bears get the ball, move down the field, and get a chance to win it with a field goal. But, these are the Bears we're talking about. The kicker pulls a Crosby and misses from inside 40. Figures.

Then the most incredible defensive play of the night. A punch tackle on Petersen and . . . PLOP goes the football. Recovered by Da Bears.

Didja notice how the Bears always ran for no yardage on first down? Never works. But, kept doing it. Lovie. Gotta love him.

Second play, Cutler wasn't about to give Crosby, or whatever his name is, another chance. He threw the best ball of his career, 40 yards to a streaking open receiver. Game over.

All that fawning over Brent by the broadcast crew gone to waste. Serves them right. I have to say, though, this game proves what an idiot Chldress is. While I'm clearly not a fan of players becoming, in their minds, more important than the coach, Brent likely could have won this game completely on his own.

Whatever. No more number one seed for the viqueens. THey'll have to go on the road.

Anyway. Contrats to Mikey on his incredibly stupid pick to win the pool! Here is the rest:

I've come to a decision. We will have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the Master's pool. $140, $100, and $60 will be awarded. Again, I drop your 2 lowest scores and total your best 15 games. For those of you in the Master's pool who have missed the weekly pool, you were automatically given the footballlocks.com spread total as your total for the week. In some cases that was good. In others, not so.

Johnny remains on top comfortably, but Lins is in striking distance in second. The real battle is for the third place spot where 8 people have a chance.

Now, two things to remember. If two people are tied for first, one of those people will become the first place winner, and the other person will become the second place winner . . . not the person in second place who's actually in third. Got it?

Second, I will use your point total of the Packer game as a tie breaker. Which means, I can't have any repeats. Whoever claims a number first gets it. I'll contact you by email if you need to change your point total. THis last week is going to be tricky with some teams wanting to rest their starters. The AFC is still rather jumbled with so many teams still vying for a playoff spot. Good luck to everyone!

Finally, I will have a bracket for the playoffs. Sheets will be $10 each (you can do more than one) and winner take all. I will also have the requisite Superbowl Pick-a-Square. So, keep some of that Christmas money handy.

Week 15 results

Jared Bush. Williams can't seem to cover a guy without jumping all over him, and Jared . . . Jared couldn't cover a stationary receiver. The guy could just be standing there, and Jared would blow the coverage. *sigh*

As for those who want to blame Crosby for the loss remember this . . . he missed in the second half. The Packers had a whole half of football to either score again or keep the Steelers from scoring again.

Miles to go before I sleep, right? Anyway . . .

Clearly, a weird week of results. I've often said, in the past, that weeks like this favor someone who doesn't know anything about football. That, or someone very lucky. Well, there was a little of both, this week, as we had a tie after the Monday night game. With 12 correct each, Johnny and . . . yes, Jamie were the creams that rose to the top. Tie breaker time. Johnny guessed a paltry 38.

Before I go on, I've explained how Jamie and I pick our games so I won't bore you with rehashing that. But, all season I've had her use a single point total of 50 for her guess. In fact, I use the same total every week. A different total, of course. It's just what I . . . we do. Except this week. For some odd reason I had Jamie change her points guess. Actually, I thought the game would be more defensively fought than it obviously was. I don't think anyone got close to 73 points for the over/under.

What? Get on with it?

So, considering I thought it would be a defensive struggle what total did I have Jamie go with?

Two points, Johnny. Two points. Beat by a nine year old girl. Hey, she was waving the money in my face last night!

Lots of movement in the Master's. Zak did horribly. Thus, move himself out of the top. Mr. Becker tanked and moved himself down quite a bit. Lindsay fell a little. I fell. Scott was making a move but has stalled. With his almost win, Johnny sits alone on top with a 3 game edge. Lose the battle but win the war, huh?

You'll notice that everyone did pretty good this week. Funny, though. No matter how goofy . . . well, not so goofy in retrospect . . . a pick is, no matter how heavily the odds favor a team, there will always be one person who will pick the other team. Such is the case with the Cardinal - 49er game. Only one person picked the Niners. Jim Z over at eMedia. Somehow, Jim had enough of a connection to the football gods that he saw the Niners winning that game . . . when no one else did. Amazing.

No. He didn't win the pool. I just think that's amazing.

Actually, with 12 correct, Zak, once again, wins this week's pot. Congratulations, Zak! Many, many people had 11 correct. Would have been a nightmare had Zak not done so well. Once again, I escape a tie breaker hell.

The week:

In the Master's, Johnny continues to battle with Jim for top honors. In the upcoming weeks I will detail the sordid details of how people will actually win this thing. As soon as I figure it out. For now, three more weeks to go. Anything can happen. Including taking the money and running off to Bermuda. Oddly, though, they have strict laws on nude sunbathing. Huh.

Steelers are up next. There are also a lot of close games. I'll have to cheat again.

So, right as I was about to get to the results . . . zzzzzzzzzzzzt! The power goes out.

Heh. Well, between that and the mountain of wash there was to fold the results kinda got away from me.

Anyway. Here are the weekly results. Maybe Kelly will frame this. One interesting over sight . . . Scott ALSO had 12 correct . . . and ALSO picked 44 for the total score! THat would have made three people with exact same submissions.

There was the possibility of a hundred-way tie, or something . . . but, thankfully for me, it didn't work out that way. Going in to Monday night's game Jim Becker and John Crossman were tied with 13 each. Had the Patriots won, Mr. Becker would have won as he picked the Patsies to win. Of course, the Saintlies won and since John picked them that gave him an outstanding 14 correct and this week's win. Congratulations, Johnny! What's particularly nice is that he won more than $3. Which is what usually happens when he wins.

Actually, most people did pretty good. I'm sure there are a few of you who think you may have won . . . prior to reading this. Oh well, too bad, so sad. Suck it up. There's five more weeks in the regular season. No time for crying now.

Wow. Most people did real well this week. So well, in fact, there was a 5 way tie after the Monday Night game. Myself, Zak, John Crossman, Lindsay, and Mosey (from GE) all had 12 correct. So, we go to the tie breaker. I don't know about anyone else, but my tie breaker is the same each week . . . 60. Zak guessed 44, John Crossman 33, Lindsay 35, and Mosey 42. The actual total points score was 54, thus I, your humble host, won yet again! Yay me!! The win also brings me to within 5 of the leader in the Master's Pool. The results:

Weekly: One note, those highlighted in blue had their picks tabulated from the spread. While it counts toward the Master pool totals, it cannot win one a weekly contest.

Packers play on Thanksgiving in Detroilet. The game of the week has to be the Saints, at home, against New England. Right now, the Saints are favored by 3. Should be quite a game!

Week 10 results

Two things. First, funny how when a team loses to one of the worst teams in football . . . you start to lose confidence. Especially when going up against a decidedly stronger opponent. Point spread was only 3, though. I fell for it. I picked the Cowgirls.

Second, also funny how most people started upping their point guesses. I thought I had a chance there for a while. Anyway . . .

A three way tie after tonight's game. Cherie, Zak, and myselfish. We all had 11 correct. I guessed 60 points, Zak guessed 65 points, and Cherie guessed 57. The actual total was 24. So, no one wins due to such awful guessing!

Kidding. Cherie wins! Again! And, that makes three for the Burbach household. Which means, they officially become the "hated ones". Booooo! Hissss!

As for the Master Pool. There's a bit of jockeying for the lead. With his picks, Zak moves in to first ahead of Scott who briefly held the lead for a week. I'm now 5 games down.

We had a two way tie after Monday Night's game. Bot your's truly and Scott had 11 correct. We go to the tie breakers. The actual point total of the Slackers and Buccaneers is 66 points. Scott thought only 44 total points would be scored. I felt there would be 60! Which means, I win!!! Woo hooooo!! Plus, I think I'm the first repeat offender! Double woo hoooo!!

With my win I also creep up once again in the Master's Pool. Though with HIS win Scott takes over first place. Here are the results.

There was a three way tie after Monday night's game . . . so, we go to the tie breaker. Guess what? I don't have my sheets with me! Which means I don't have the exact information with me as of this writing. Just be assured, the results are official. I have the sheets in my office.

Anyway, the closest to the final tally of the Packer Viqueens game . . . Zak Becker!! Congratulations, Zak! With his win, he also moves up in to first place i the Master's Pool. If you look at his results . . . steady, never coming in first (except now . . . maybe that's a curse) but never faltering badly. As I've so often said, those are the ones who will win. After Zak there's a thousand-way tie for second. Long way to go . . . long way to go.

Smell that? *sniff sniff* That's the stink of bad picks. Hoo! Stinky! Anyone got any fabreeze?

Anyway. Mosey had 10 correct going in to Monday night's game, and looked to win a long over due pot. Unfortunately, he picked the Chargers to win. In the mean time, Cherie Burbach had 9 correct and picked the Broncos to be victorious. They were. So, we go to the tie breaker. Cherie guessed 45 total points in the Packer game, Mosey guessed 51. The actual point total was 26 . . . as the Packers scored the only points in the game. Thus Cherie wins by way of tie breaker! Congratulations, Cherie!

Another close one. Chad and your's truly both had 11 correct going in to Monday Night's game. We both picked the Jets to win so it simply a matter of the score. Well, had the second half gone as the first did, Chad would have won as he picked a paltry 32 points. I picked 45. Miami won 31 to 27 for a total of 58. Therefore I am the winner!! Yay me!!

As for the Master's pool, Johnny holds on with Greg, Jim, and Lindsay right behind him.

Packer's host the Lions next. This is far from a gimme as the Lions have been playing pretty hard. Tauscher is back and Clifton might be ready. Both which could help Aaron . . . and Grant. Still, we should all pay homage to our Fran Tarkenton jersey's to help keep Rodger's healthy.

Drama unfolded as two participants had 12 correct after Monday Night's game. Steve Winkler, again, and Jim Becker both had 12 correct picks. In the tie breaker, Jim guessed 50, and Steve guessed 56. The actual score was 30 - 23 for a total of 53!! Another tie!! So, I went to the next tie breaker . . . who chose the Packer game correctly . . . Jim Becker. Congratulations to Jim!!

Observers will observe that both Joe, Hannah, and John also had 12 correct, but weren't mentioned. They all actually missed their picks. Their picks were automatically filled in with who was favored that week. The caveat is that you cannot win a weekly pool in that manner as you're not supplying a tie breaker. It counts to the yearly total. But, doesn't allow you to win a weekly pool.

Well, I started this earlier today, but the vicodin made it impossible to type anything coherent. So, I'm sacrificing comfort for your desire for the results. I know, I know . . . I'm a saint.

Over all, scores were better this week. But, with 14 correct we had a clear winner . . . Steve Winkler! Congratulations, Steve! I'm truly happy for Steve as he's a good guy, been doing this a long time, and is a huge jimi the geek fan. A signed 8X10 is also on the way.

A few of reminders. If you're in the Master's Pool, your picks will be automatically made for you using the favored team for that week. Picks are due right before kick off. I drop your two lowest scores. I do my best to confirm everyone's picks, but especially early in the season, I'm not always home at the start of the games.

Finally, I've streamed everything such to make it easier and faster for me, and to make it less accident prone. I still urge everyone to follow their picks and results and let me know if you find a discrepancy.

A clear winner this week. 8 games had a spread of 3 points and that reflected mostly in the scores . . . except for one Linsday, who managed to out guess, I mean, out smart everyone with her picks. With 12 correct she's the winner of this week's pot. Congrat's to Lindsay! Should be a little easier this week as the spreads are a bit more defined. Still, there are several key match ups that should make for good games.

As for the Pack . . . what the O-line is doing is making stars out of nobodys on the opponents defense. You'd think every team had a Mike Strahan on the line. Not to discredit the Bengals. They well could be a playoff bound team. But, we have no running game and a sieve for an offensive line. Our offensive line is . . . offensive. What's more, defensively, we can't stop the run. In two weeks Petersen is going to have a 300 yard rushing game. Favre will be 8 of 10 for 100 yards . . . maybe a touchdown. Whatever. We've got to figure out our problems and do it fast. Injuries don't help. Especially, when one guy goes down and it shifts the entire line to different responsibilities. Not good.

On the plus side, Pittsburgh lost, the Patriots lost, and the Cowpies lost. Makes me happy happy.

Well, if this opening week is any indication, it's going to be another goofy year in the NFL. Which mean anyone can win the pools. Here's what happened. After last nights game we had a two way tie. Andy and Joe both had 14 correct. So, we go to the tie breaker. Joe guessed 65 points, Andy guessed 35 points. The final score was 21-15 for a total of 36 points so Andy wins by virtue of the tie breaker! Congratulations Andy!!

Below you'll find the standings in image format. Again, to help in streamlining operations here at Prozak Productions, this will be the norm. If anyone wants a copy of the spreadsheet, just let me know. Since this is the first week both the weekly winners and Master players are ranked the same. In future weeks I'll post a weekly image and a Master's image and indicated who's in what pool.

Packers vs Bears

OK. I don't need many games like that. In the words of the immortal Rosanne Rosanna Dana, "I thought I was gonna die!" A few thoughts.

Before we got on anyone's case about the offense, let's not forget how good Chicago's defense is. Virtually intact for the past two years. A very. Good. Defense.

Cutler looked lost. I blame part of that on something I've said before . . . what was there to study with regard to the Packer defense? Nothing. Between a new system and a new defense on the other side of the ball, Cutler really had the deck stacked against him.

Clearly there were some problems on the O line. Again, though, the Chicago defense had as much to do with our problems as we did.

Except for the third and one call, I didn't much like our play calling. Didn't seem like Rodgers used all his weapons in the passing game. Hard to tell on TV, of course, but the ball wasn't spread around too much at all.

I almost soiled myself when McCarthy called for the squibb kick as the end of the game. WTF?!?! Give them the ball on the 40 so they can win?!?! Kick it out of the endzone!!

Jordy looked pretty good on returns.

Crosby . . . just make the field goals. Did pretty well.

Our punting is improved. A lot.

I predict Brandon Chillar will have a good year. That guy is awesome.

We should have had 6 interceptions.

It was a bit of an ugly win, but I'll take it. Especially since Chicago plays Pittsburgh next week and we take on Cincinnati. If all goes well, we could be in a good position before the Minnesota game.

Week 1

Funny how family gets in the way of things. No geekcast . . . yet. But, in the interest of making sure everyone knows what's going on, here's what's going on.

First, there's the weekly pool. $1 to get in. Anyone can play, anytime. No need to sign up, no long term commitments. Pick who you think will win, fill in the tie breaker, and submit. Who ever has the most correct wins that week's pot.

The Master pool is a year long pool. You have to sign up. It's $25, but just once. Once signed up I track your picks throughout the year. Who over has the most correct at the end of the regular season wins the pot. In the past I've also awarded a second and third place winner. It all depends on how many people sign up.

Two small changes..

One, online only. Use the link to the right to access the picks. I'll not be printing out sheets, anymore. Most people were doing it online anyway and it's one less thing to worry about. If you like a sheet thingy, print out the picks and copy them.

Two, as before, for the Master pool participants, I will drop your two lowest scores. But, 15 weeks MUST be completed to qualify for winnings. In the past, a few people disqualified themselves for not completing 15 weeks of play. This year, if you're signed up for the Master pool and you miss a week, I'll automatically pick the favorites for that week for you. I'll use the footballlocks.com website I link to determine the favorites for that week. Simply put, no one will miss a week, anymore 'casuse of travel or vacations. Nice of me, huh?

For those who want to participate in the Master's Pool, I'll credit you for the money. I just need to know that you want to play it.

When filling out the picks make sure to fill in your real name and email address. If I can't figure out who you are or be able to email you, I'll give the win to the next in line.

The first game of the season is Thursday night so I need all picks in before kick off on Thursday. Good luck, and make good picks!

2009 NFL Season

Here 'tis, Jimi the Geek's Oscar Contest. As with previous contests, up for grabs is a $25 movie pass. No entry fee required! How nice of me! Anyway, simply pick who you think will win and submit. One caveat, I gotta know you. I don't necessarily have to like you, but this is open to friends of the geek only. So, when entering, I NEED real names and an email address. Failure to comply and you're out. Booted. Tossed. Disqualified. Shown the door. Asked to leave. Actually, that's too polite. Sh*t canned.

Tying Up Loose Ends

We had two pools going for the Superbowl. One was the Bracket Pool, the other was the Matrix Pool. We also has a contest for the Grammy Awards. Here's how things worked out:

In the Bracket Pool, it came down to Jenny and Zak. An Arizona win would go to Jenny. A Pittsburgh win would go to Zak. Of course, Pittsburgh won, so Zak won the pot. Congratulations to Zak.

In the Matrix Pool I was able to sell all of the squares. So, each quarter paid $25. For the first time ever, I think, we had 4 winners! Joe, Chris, Andy, and Jeff each won a quarter. Nice! I didn't. Bad.

Finally, in the Grammys contest it was close. I had a respectable 11 correct. Jesse had 13. But, Brooke had 14 correct! So, Brooke won the movie pass! Congratulations, Brooke!

For what it's worth, Zak scored 6, Julie scored 3, Maria scored 2, and Mary scored 4. Woah. Diaper needs changing . . . stinky.

I've got one more $25 movie pass, and that will go to the wiener of the Oscars Contest. Stay tuned!

The Superbowl!!

We're finally, sadly, here. The Superbowl is the ultimate of sports greatness, but it's also means the end of a season. What a season, too. The Cardinals are in the Superbowl! No one, and I mean no one would have guessed that. Conversely, The Cowpokes and the Patriots failed to make it in to the playoffs. Miami and Atlanta were contenders after being stinkers last year. The Jets and Brett Favre . . . well . . . they fell apart, actually. Gruden and Shanahan were given their green slips.

As for the Packers, the defensive coaching staff, save one, were fired. The special teams coach resigned . . . ahead of likely being fired. Dom Capers is now the man on defense. I think that's a good sign. It will mean some changes and possibly a new scheme. But, you have to admit, the old scheme wasn't working very well.

(Sigh)

This leaves one of two last orders of business. First of all, in the bracket pool only two people have a chance at the winnings. Here are the results after the last playoff games:

Actually, only one person has a chance at their pick winning. Zak. He picked Pittsburgh. I forget who Jenny picked (would be a week if I didn't forget my notes one more time?) but it wasn't either of the final teams. Nor did anyone else. So, it's simple. If the Cardinals win, Jenny wins. If the Steelers win, Zak wins.

Finally, I'll have a matrix pool set up, so have your dollars (or quarters . . . Sandy) ready. It will be $1 a square and I'll pay off each quarter.

I think everyone knows that Katie won both award show pools. She now has two movie certificates worth $50. Congratulations, Katie! She knows her stuff. Next up are the Grammy's. Again, up for grabs will be a $25 movie certificate. The show is on February 8th and I know a bunch of you will be gone. But, it is an online pool only and I'll have it available early next week. No entry fee required. Now, if you think you have no chance at Katie's superior pop culture non-knowledge, relax. She's disqualified from winning any more. She'll take part. She has to. But, she can't win anymore. I said so.

OK. We agreed. Whatever.

Boy, it's been a bad playoff's for the favored teams. Fits right in with the rest of the season, though. And certainly makes forfun watching. Anyway, in the picks, many of you are dead as you have no more teams advancing. Here are the standings after this weekend:

The People's Choice Awards

It's that time of year . . . awards season! If you know anything about me at all, you know I'm an awards show junkie. I watch mostly for the babes, and the ridiculousness of it all, but I do watch. So, while we wait on the playoff's let's have some fun.

We start things off with The People's Choice Awards Now, none of the award shows make any sense. The PC awards are supposedly voted for by the fans. I HIGHLY doubt that. First, why are there only three choices in most categories? Second, Whoopi in a comedy category? What has she done that's been funny?

Wild Wildcard Weekend

It started with the end of the season. Of course, I wish the Packers would have done better. But, honestly, it makes watching the playoffs less stressful without the Packers there. Weird, I know.

Anyway, things couldn't have gone any better. The Cowpies self destructed and were eliminated. Belicheat didn't make it in. The Bears got sent packing. And the Jets . . . oh, man . . . Brettie and the Jets just lay a big turd.

It got even better this weekend. Manning and the Colts . . . out. Beat by San Diego. That San Diego defense was off the charts, baby! Sharper and the Viqueens . . . out. Beat by the Eagles. Did you watch that game? The Minnesota defense just gave up. Like the Ivan Lendl of tennis . . . just stopped playing. I loved it. Then the young gun against the seasoned vet. Nothing against the Falcons, really. It was just nice to see Warner in winning form. The only game I wish could have been different was the Miami/Baltimore game. I wish Pennington would have advanced one more round. Just to rub the Jets and Favre's nose in it. But, geez, Baltimore played great, great football.

On the NFC side of things, I'm leaning Carolina and the Giants, and Carolina going on. On the AFC side . . . no clue. Each team could make a run at it. Good stuff. Good stuff. And that's why thy play the game!

Congratulations go out to Jim, Lindsay, and Mikey for winning. While Jim was on top throughout the season, both Lindz and Mikey came up from the middle to take their places. Good job to both.

Thanks EVERYONE for participating this year. Except for this week, winnings were $20 to $25 each week. That's nice as it better than pays for the year. I hope I've done my part in my attempts to keep this entertaining.

As for the Packers. I think we can agree that they're better than their record. At least, a little. Six games were within 4 points. Only in the Dallas and New Orleans games did they get blown out. Reasons? Several.

The offensive line. Pretty good at pass protection, stinky at run blocking. Injuries. They were constantly shuffling people around. Also, I don't think Grant was 100%. Maybe they should have gone with Jackson more. Still, the blocking was bad. They'll get some people back, but I think they need to look for quality starters.

The defensive line. Aaron Kampman was the only real performer. Again, injuries played a part. But, they also let a couple get away that they could have kept. Thompson, if anything, hasn't shown an ability to draft defense, or a willingness to open the wallet some. The Packers need a GIlbert Brown. They could use Julius Peppars.

I also think the defensive scheme was out of whack. The linebackers, and I think they're good, played too far off the ball. Picking up the tight end or the slot receiver was a HUGE problem. And, they never adjusted. Maybe with a better line the scheme would work better. Still, I would consider firing the defensive coach. But, only if they're willing to bring in real talent.

Special teams. Fire the coach. Yesterday. For the love of pete, they consistently gave the opposing team the ball on the forty yard line. Coverage sucked. Punting, originally, sucked. The most pathetic part of the game. Remember Bidwell? Geez, when we really needed a good punt to pin teams deep, we got 30 yarders. It drove me nuts.

What the Packers don't need? Running backs, receivers, tight ends, linebackers, defensive backs, kickers . . . or a quarterback. Speaking of . . . Favre crashed and burned. There were two games of note Rodgers had a chance to win where he wound up throwing interceptions. Two games. How confident were we EVER that Favre would bring the team back from being down to victory? Weren't we ALWAYS worried he'd throw a pick? Plus, given that the pass protection was only fair this year, I think we got a lot more from Aaron than we would have with Brett. Enough said.

So, let's see what Thompson does this year. If the Packers could sign two starters on the defensive line, get who's out healthy and one more pick on the offensive line, they could be very much back in it next season.

Finally. In round three of the all out, blah, blah, blah . . . the Beckers came out on top, 44 to 41. Not a knockout, but a decisive win. Of course, Zak led the way for the Becker team with 13. The Winklers did good, but the 6 Nancy got . . . well . . . good thing this isn't some stranded in an elevator reality show.

Week 15 Partial

Done? Now, a few people missed some games. John, Hannah, and Steve all missed at least one game. Hence, their total isn't in line with everyone else's and why they're at the bottom of the list. Fact is, John will place much higher once everyone's two lowest scores are dropped. So, go back and look at the list again. I'll wait.

(No. The nylons always snag. I pref . . . . I gotta go.)

OK. Scott's been using every method known to man to make his picks. Including some rituals that include chickens. But, I won't get in to that. Actually, it's the next guy on the food chain, Zak. Here's a guy who PLAYED football and he's in college. You'd think he'd be winning this pool several times a year. Fact is, his younger sister Hannah won four times in one year! Then I think she used the "prettiest helmets" method. She's older now so uses the "who's got the nicer butts" method.

What? Fired? Again?!

Anyway, point is, Zak seemed like a young teen going from table to table at a wedding reception drinking the little bits of adult drinks that were left in the glasses. Heck, you wouldn't know he was there until he started yaking in the bushes outside. So it is with the football pool. He seemed content on the bottom. Maybe he wanted to keep his sister company, I don't know. But there's he's been.

Well, the Texans did everything they could to lose this game. Problem was, the Packers would have nothing to do with that. Oh no, the Packers were going to lose come hell or high water . . . dammit. Now, don't even get started on the whole "if we still had Favre" crap. Rodgers has been about the only consistent player on the team. Neither Favre or Rodgers plays defense, and it's the defense that's the suckiest sucking that ever sucked. Guarantee the defensive coordinator gets the axe.

On to the picks.

Huh. I guess calling everyone a bunch of dummies got everyone thinking a bit more this week. Well, except Scott. This one is tough, though. Had the Bucs won Lindsay would have walked away with the win as in the tie breaker she would have been closest.. With the Panther's win, Jim Becker and Jeff Pool tied. In the tie breaker, Jeff guessed 48, Jim guessed 54. The actual total points scored was 45. For those numerically challenged, Jeff is closest and wins this week's pot. Congratulations, Jeff. This also the first time since Hannah picked the winning team by the prettiest helmets that a person has won three pots in a season. What's REALLY tough about this, is that Jeff's a client and I feel I can't . . . shouldn't insult him by calling him a cheater, or wonder if he'll claim all these winnings on his taxes, or . . . what? I don't know what's worse . . . the sucky year the Packers are having, everyone's sucky picks, or what you guys are doing to me as a result of your sucky picks.

Well, it wasn't a good week for home teams as most of them lost this week. Including the Packers. As a result of his performance, Derrick Frost, the punter, was cut. It was so bad the Packers didn't even wait to secure a punter in his place. If you ask me, though, the special teams coach should also be fired and the special team players themselves let go.

There's some good news for the Packers, though:

The Green Bay Packers are struggling this season, but they remain an iconic presence when it comes to team branding.

Turnkey Sports & Entertainment, a sports marketing company, has released its team brand index, and the Packers are No. 1 in all of sports. Last year, the index ranked the Packers 10th.

The index measures a team's brand strength in its home market. More than 12,000 sports fans, 18 and older, were surveyed in 47 different markets in the country.

The survey was completed last June, so it's clear it didn't hurt the Packers were coming off a 13-3 season.

"What this is saying is the following the Packers have is more intensely loyal to supporting the Packers than any other team," said Len Perna, president and chief executive of New Jersey-based Turnkey Sports & Entertainment. "What this basically says is that all other things being equal, a sponsor gets more value in sponsoring the Packers than any other team.

On Monday night, 11/24/2008, the Green Bay Packer playoff chances were laid to rest. After a long struggle in the first half battling a strange black and gold virus, the disease metastasized and the Packers finally succummed to loss in the third quarter. With no defense to fight the virus, the black and gold disease swept through the defense eventually infecting the offense causing loss. The Packers fell 51 to 29 in what may be it's last breath for a division title, and a spot in the playoffs.

Week 12 Preview

Last week, most of the favorites won their games . . . and most people picked the favorites. Well, except Scott. The batteries in his Magic 8 Ball must have gone dead. Anyway, this week looks to be a dicier week. Many games have a 3 point or less line on them. Only a few "sure" picks. Of the games, the Jets, Titans game looks to be the most interesting. The Titans are unbeaten, and the Jets are a much improved team this year. Surprisingly so. I think it's clear Favre factors in to their success. Though, you can never be sure with Brett. This game might well decide just how far the Jets can really go.

Another game of interest is the Miami, Patriots game. Miami embarrassed the Patriots in their first meeting, and they did it running a college type of offense. Like the Jets, the Dolphins are a much improved team, though inconsistent. On the other side of the field, Belli-cheat surely wants revenge. That could be his undoing.

Lastly, the Packers, Saints game should be good. Saints are favored by 2.5. Likely because they're at home, which is always worth a couple of points on a spread. Quite honestly I think the Packers are a better team. The Saints have been strong in the passing game, but the Packers strength on defense is against the passing game. So, it figures to be a good match up. Bears play the Rams. The Bears should win. The Viqueens play the Jaguars, that could go either way. So, the Packers need to win to stay in the hunt.

Forget Sarah Palin moose hunting. Mike McCarthy went Bear hunting over the weekend. His weapons? A Grant decoy, a Woodson trap, and a Rodgers gun. In thee hours time, not only did he bag over his limit, he had them stuffed and mounted . . . and one turned in to a rug to wipe the mud off his shoes.

Whatever roar the Bears had was turned in to a whimper as the Packers dominated the Bears 37 to 3. A stellar game. Lovie Smith should have had GPS chips implanted in to his players as they where no where to be found. Orten didn't find a wide receiver until the third quarter. By then it was too late.

A 52 yard field away from winning. Doesn't matter who the kicker is, that's not a high percentage kick. It was close. Within 2 yards. But, as we know, close only counts with dirty bombs, horse shoes, and silent but deadlies. Sure, Crosby should have made the kick. More than that, though, McCarthy should have put his Magic 8 Ball away and called some real plays. How about that running game, Mike? Maybe you should do something to slow that rush, Mike. Rodgers was hit more often than Paris Hilton, pressured more than Kirstie Ally on a new diet plan. Rodgers was the side beef for the front four Balboa's of the Viqueens. What happened? In the first game we didn't hear Allen's name at all. This game, his name was called more than Lindsay Lohan's at the clinic. If you were like me, you'd be smart and wonderful, and you'd be wondering where the defense went. Some where along the way the defense had a Southwest Airlines moment. You know, "want to get away?" Well, they did go away. Some place in their minds quiet and warm. Not purple. The defensive line needed some Tim Allen strength gap spackle mixed in with a little Emeril BAM! Instead, they were playing a bad game of Red Rover with Petersen. Mean while, Nick Barnett is wearing a t shirt that reads: I Went to the Metrodome and all I Got Was his Lousy Torn ACL". Out for the season. Great. The sieve sprung a leak.

It makes sense.

One good thing, we can finally lay to rest the China Doll stuff about Rodgers. I'll see your broken pinky and raise you a separated shoulder. I win. Rodgers is the man.

In the end, I blame this one on McCarthy. A coach is supposed to study films of the other teams. Learn it's strengths. Exploit it's weaknesses. Hey, Mike . . . we're the team in green and gold.

Still, in spite of Petersen gaining almost 200 yards, we were 6 feet away from winning. In any other game, a team would win 52 to nothing with that kind of stat. Let's face it, Frerotte blows. He blows chunks. We can thank him for keeping the game as close as it was.

Still, I'm throwing away my purple crayons.

Well, not even close, really. Anyway, as blogged, Jim Becker and Dana were tied after Monday's game for this week's winnings. So, we go to the tie breaker.

This is so exciting!

The actual total points scored was 35. I guessed 31. But, I'm sure you don't care. Dana guessed 49, Jim guessed 44. Therefore, Jim Becker wins! Congratulations, Jim!

As for the game . . . hard fought. Very few penalties. Rodgers, good day. Driver, great day. Grant, ok day. Even though the defense kept the Collins in check, the Titans were able to run for over 150 yards. Just a bit too much. Grant only got 89 yards rushing. More importantly, the Packers had to settle for 3 when they should have had 7 on 3 occasions. Of course, credit the Titan defense. Still, we needed one good break away for a touchdown from Grant and the offensive line.

While one wants to win games, this is an affordable loss. The next two are division games and much more important.

As I eluded to in an earlier post, a site I was using to . . . uh . . . temporarily park the cheerleader videos I was shar . . . uh . . . allowing you to view from a different venue, took umbrage with my methodology. Huh. As I also eluded, most cheerleader sites suck in the video and "sharing" department. Thus, unless I post all Houston Texan cheerleader videos, which aren't bad, I must find another weekly man-fix. Well, I didn't have to look far. One of my favorite diversions has video clips online. At the very moment you are reading this, Aaron Rodgers is better than Brett Favre.
Right now, who are you taking at the quarterback position for a game tomorrow? Who do you trust?

Frankly, it's easy.

Favre was turnover prone yet again with two more picks in the Jets' horrendous loss to the Raiders in Oakland. And Michael Huff should've had a third pick in overtime. Favre's pick at the end of regulation didn't have a Jet target in the state of California. The Jets are 3-3, and Favre has been reckless with the football in losses to New England, San Diego and the lowly Raiders.

Rodgers, meanwhile, is wowing everyone in Green Bay with his toughness and excellent play. He was sensational in back-to-back wins at Seattle and last Sunday at home in what turned out to be a laugher against the Colts. Rodgers has been brilliant delivering the football to a bevy of targets while protecting the pigskin. In talking to Rodgers last week, he agreed that the win in Seattle was his best performance of the season.

Rodgers told me that his "take a deep breath" moment wasn't the win against the Vikings in Week 1. It was in the nationally televised preseason game against the Bengals when he played well and the fans gave him a standing ovation. Rodgers said it became the team he was responsible for piloting.

And then there is Jay Glazer's FOXSports.com exclusive that said Favre called Lions coaches before the Week 2 matchup to give them exactly what Green Bay runs. That's bush-league. There are players in that Green Bay locker room that would've run through a brick wall for Favre.

OK. That's out of the way.

Well, had Denver won, Jim Becker would have been sole winner of week 7. But, life in NFL pools isn't that easy. As has been the case so far, the NFL has been anything but easy. As such, we have a four way tie for week 7.

Mr. Becker, Larry Schmidt, Dana, and Steve Winkler all have 11 correct. So, we go to the tie breaker. The actual points scored in the Packer game was 48. Jim guessed a very optimistic 61. Dana guesses 44. Larry guessed 45. But, Steve guessed 49! One point off thus wins this week's pool! Congratulations Steve!

Actually, I guessed 48. Although I only got 10 correct I'm declaring myself the winner.

'Cause I'm a big baby, that's why.

Aw, heck. If you've ever met Steve, you know he's a nice guy. I can't do that to him. He's the winner.

But, if it were anyone else . . . well, except Jenny.

And my girlie.

She'd kick my butt.

Speaking of butt kicking, Brett Favre has been in the news. First off, what a cry baby. You'd think he was retiring football . . . again . . . after listening to him blubber on after the Jets loss to the Raiders. Geez. Brett Favre Wuss Pants.

As for Brett selling secrets to the Lions . . . if he did, we should thank him and ask that he call everyone else on the Packer schedule. Whatever. He's a liar. We know that. He's a baby. We know that. What some people don't seem to know is what an egotistical jerkwad he can be. I can't say as I care one way or the other. My understanding is that this isn't unusual. So, who cares?

Week 6 prelim

Bottom line, the Packer DB's owned the Colts WR's. Each one caught only two passes the entire game! The Colts are very much a finesse team and up against a team like the Packers, who play very physical with the receivers, have problems. It didn't hurt that the Packers also provided a steady dose of pressure on Manning, though there weren't any sacks. But, between the pressure causing Manning to throw early and the disruption of the timing, Manning was frustrated and it showed.

Rodgers was efficient. Grant started to get some mojo back. The game, though, belongs to Rouse. Not only did he stay "at home" in coverage, he read Manning like a book with large type and moved on the pass beautifully to make the interception. Plus, he ran it all the way back, 99 yards, for a touchdown. I have to say, I was surprised at his speed.

4 and 3 and going in to the bye week. Beautiful.

As for the picks . . . a much better week for everyone. If Denver wins, we'll have a sole winner. If not, I'll have to get out my slide rule.

For the Colts: Addai, their star running back, is hurt. Brackett, their star linebacker is hurt. Both are questionable. The Packers are dinged up. Atari may play. Colts seemed to get it together last week against a good defense in the Ravens. They're in Green Bay. Rodgers is playing good. Both teams are desperate to win. This is my first game of the week.

The second game is the Viqueens at Da' Bears. Orten is hot, but the Viqueens have a good defense. They're in Chicago, but the fans would turn on their moms if it got them more beer. I smell upset.

a 40 year old Chad Johnson starts for injured HemRomoid. Considering how Tony got hurt, Chad might want to consider reserving a room at Chicago University Hospital.

Anyway, after week 5 only two teams are undefeated . . . the Giants and the Titans.

Speaking of the Giants. Plaxico Burress returns from suspension for missing a team practice without notice. The Giants have won without him, of course, but his return give Eli another weapon. Eli is the number one ranked quarterback in the AFC.

Two teams that are also doing good, the Falcons and the Bears. Orten had 334 yards passing last week. These two 3-2 teams meet this week. This game is tied for my game of the week.

Injuries continue to plague the Packers. Rodgers, Bigby, Woodson, Clifton, Hawk, Jones, and Hall are all hurt. Rodgers, Woodson, and Hawk will all play. The others . . .

Another team with injury problems are the Eagles. A number of their starters are questionable for Sunday.

The other game of the week? Baltimore and Indianapolis. This could be a huge game. Indy also has injury problems, and an anemic offense. The Ravens, while not great on offense, have a defense that alone can win games. Lewis and Manning. I smell upset.

However, my idiocy is well documented. This week's match ups are all up for grabs, if you ask me. Can Favre and Warner repeat their performances? Can the Lions and Rams regroup this year? WIll Holmgren pop an artery during Sunday's game?

Jim Becker is now on top in the Master's Pool. While he's on top, though, his sprogs are on the bottom. Hmm. There's a joke there . . . but, I hesitate. Owner and all.
